From Michigan to Wisconsin – Betting on the Betlyons

“We have to get used to the idea that at the most important crossroads in our lives, there are no signs.” ~ Ernest Hemingway

As 2018 came to a close, The Hubs and I found ourselves taking stock of our life. Most people take this time to make resolutions, but in our family we like to evaluate where we are in our lives, where we want to be, and what steps we need to make to get there. We didn’t come away from our conversation with any concrete plans, but we knew that we were not content. The primary reason being that the company we both worked for was a toxic environment, breeding constant negativity in our lives. So, we went into 2019 knowing that this negative aspect needed to change.

Since The Hubs’ career is the primary bread winner, he began casually looking for work in what we consider to be interesting places. Somewhere new and exciting. He scheduled a few interviews, and we were planning to go from there. While we were frustrated with our work situations, we weren’t in any rush to jump into moving on to something new.

A few weeks into our casual searching (mid January) we were planning a trip to Southeast Wisconsin for a job interview. That very same day, our company decided to cut both of our positions, and we found ourselves suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed. And just like that the casual searching became a priority.

We were fortunate to have a job offer a week later, but that would mean packing up all of our possessions and moving from Michigan to Wisconsin! After ironing out details, it was decided we would be leaving Michigan on Valentine’s Day!

This would be our fourth move in as many years. If you’ve been following along, you know that in 2016 we moved from Central Pennsylvania to Southwest Missouri.(You can read about that by clicking on this link: https://jessbetlyon.com/2016/08/04/from-pa-to-mo/ )In the fall of 2017 we moved to a temporary condo in Southwest Michigan, and then in the spring of 2018 we moved to our little home in St. Joseph.

Of all of the moves I have ever made in my life, this one was by far the easiest. The Hubs’ new company took care of everything! On a Wednesday morning, the moving company showed up to pack up our belongings and load them on a truck. By early afternoon the job was done! We chose to stay in our house that night, camping out like college kids, eating take out and drinking out of red solo cups, sleeping on an air mattress while binge watching “The League” on Hulu.

Thursday morning we were off to Wisconsin! The land of beer and cheese and our little apartment west of Milwaukee were waiting for us! I think we were both ready to see what the next chapter of our lives have in store for us!

The last month and a half has flown by so quickly! The Hubs is settling in to his new job and we are enjoying getting out and exploring our new state, when the weather is cooperative! Michigan was good to us. We made many memories and watched all of the sunsets over the lake, but I think I can speak for the both of us that we are looking forward to seeing what is next!

Until Next Time: Peace, Love & Adventures
